“Longview has a great reputation and will soon be in the national news. I want to be here when it happens.” – Horace Williams

A former Texas and New York superintendent returned home to east Texas this week to begin his new job of improving academic performance in Longview ISD.

Horace Williams, a Leverett’s Chapel native, began his job as an assistant superintendent on Monday. He most recently served 6½ years as superintendent of Cedar Hill ISD, where the district improved from Academically Acceptable to Recognized by the Texas Education Agency.

“Horace has a long history of implementing positive academic change and we couldn’t be more pleased to have him working for the children of Longview ISD,” Superintendent Dr. James E. Wilcox said.

Williams is thrilled to be back home to East Texas. “I am excited to be here. I have seen kids from all backgrounds and I know where they are going.” He plans to ride around the neighborhoods to get a good feel of where the students reside. Williams is enthusiastic about LISD.

“Longview has a great reputation and will soon be in the national news,” he said. “I want to be here when it happens.” In addition, Williams is confident and passionate about his work. “Kids are the same where ever you go and parents want the best for their kids,” he said. “This is the way Dr. Wilcox and I see it, all of the kids belong to us.”

Prior to Williams’ work in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, he was superintendent of schools in Diboll ISD and on Long Island, New York, where he headed the first state takeover of an under-performing school district there. During his four years at the helm in New York, Williams oversaw the passage of a $207 million school construction bond.
